Prevod: Ivo Štandeker Spremna beseda: Andrej Škerlep Vsebina pojmov javnosti in javnega mnenja je vselej zgodovinsko določena s specifičnim razmerjem med državo in družbo, kar avtor pokaže z analizo nastanka, sprememb in zatona liberalne javnosti, njenih socialnih struktur, političnih funkcij in ideologije. Ideal sfere zasebnikov, ki zbrani v publikum skozi medij javnosti – javne in racionalne razprave – posredujejo državi potrebe civilne družbe in s tem vodijo politično avtoriteto v racionalnost, je sicer vgrajen v ustavna načela parlamentarnih demokracij, a kot tak nikoli ni obstajal. Habermas prikaže meščansko javnost 18. in 19. stoletja – njene institucije in ideologijo, ki se je edina približala idealu liberalne javnosti, in njeno izginotje s širitvijo volilne pravice in množičnega komuniciranja. Za Habermasa je razsvetljenski ideal liberalne javnosti normativna vsebina moderne, ki še danes čaka na svojo realizacijo.
