V francoskem izvirniku nosi knjiga podnaslov Tabu, magija, sveto, kar so le najbolj poudarjene in v teoriji najbolj znane kategorije v sociologiji obredov in antropologiji. Sicer se delo na izviren način in z upoštevanjem vseh relevantnih virov terenskih raziskav in teoretskih razprav podaja tudi v polje etnosociologije in enotne zgodovine arhaičnih ljudstev; najbolj drugačna obredna praksa, ne glede na svojo spektakelsko formo, je seveda žrtvovanost in žrtvovanje, drugačnost pa je nečistost – numinozno. Prav to je eno najbolj svetih doneskov Cazeneuvovega raziskovanja.
