Gre za veliko klasično delo svetovne humanistike. Že leta 1970 ga je G. E. Rusconi označil za “manifest kritične teorije družbe”, štiri leta kasneje pa je Martin Jay ugotovil, da je bila tu “celotna tradicija razsvetljenstva, ta proces bojda osvobajajoče demistifikacije, ki jo je Max Weber poimenoval die Entzauberung der Welt”, podvržena kritiki. Klasičnost dela je torej v tem, da je mnogokrat prevedeno in navajano še danes, in to zato, ker se kritika loti svojih lastnih korenin. Delo res ni nastalo iz “odčaranja”, še manj iz filozofskega začudenja nad čudesi bivajočega. Nastalo je iz osuplosti, katere vzrok je bila ugotovitev, da je s teorijo vse narobe. Vse je narobe s svetom.
