Pred dobrimi stotimi leti je Guillaume Apollinaire začel intenzivno spremljati likovno ustvarjalnost, ki ji je ostal zvest do smrti leta 1918. Ni bil samo ljubitelj, občudovalec in kritik sodobnih ustvarjalcev, ampak je pronicljivo opredelil vse glavne umetniške tokove začetka 20. stoletja, ki so bili prav takrat najštevilnejši in najradikalnejši. Njegove zapise je nujno in zabavno prebirati vedno znova, saj lahko ob njih preverjamo pravilnost avtorjevih osupljivo natančnih usmeritev, vrednotenj, napovedi in razvrščanj. Če bi lahko izmerili prostor, ki ga je komu posvetil, in pohvale, ki jih je o njem napisal, bi videli, da se njegove sodbe o pomenu in kvaliteti posameznikov ne razlikujejo od današnjih.” (Iz spremne besede.)
