Besedilo, ki je v veliki meri tudi podoba določenega levičarskega obdobja legendarnih Cahiers du cinéma, kjer je avtor veliko objavljal, sprašuje o razmerju filma z realnostjo. To počne s soočenjem teorije filma in tudi prelomnic v zgodovini filma z njegovimi velikimi imeni, od Lumiera in Griffitha do Hitchcocka in Godarda. Sam avtor je k filmski teoriji prispeval analizo off glasu: glas je v sliki odsoten in jo oblega od zunaj, iz zunanjosti polja ter si tako zagotovi oblast nad sliko in prek nje nad realnim, ki ga slika kaže. Off glas je način evokacije zunanjosti polja ali “slepega polja”.
