Britanski socialni in kulturni antropolog Daniel Miller je že četrt stoletja najvidnejši specialist za posodobljeno razumevanje materialne kulture v svetu. V Materialni kulturi  (v izvirniku Stuff) povzema nekaj desetletij svojega socialno-antropološkega raziskovanja. Etnograf, ki se izogiba vnaprejšnjim potezam, zavrača izpeljavo družbenega pomena, ki ga imajo materialni predmeti v naših življenjih, neposredno iz narave družbene celote, prav tako pa zavrača razumevanje reči kot osebnega izraza uporabnikov.
